For Options 1, 4 and 6: Your Social Security Number application and original documents should be sent directly to the Federal Benefits Unit in London for processing. If you do not want your application to be processed by mail through the Federal Benefits Unit in London, you should defer your SSN application until you are in the United States. If you do not wish to have your application processed by mail through the Federal Benefits Unit in London London, you should defer your SSN application until you are in the US and you may submit your application in person at a local Social Security office.

Option 1 – How do I apply for a social security number for my child under 12?

To apply for a social security number for a child under the age of 12, the following steps are required.

Complete an application for a social security card,Formular SS-5-FS(PDF / 5 pages / 125 KB) – all questions must be answered and legible.

Submit the following original documents - photocopies will not be accepted.

  1. Proof of the birth of the child
    • Original U.S. birth certificate or original U.S. consular report of birth abroad
    • If the child was born in the United States, you must also provide evidence that you or the child have lived outside of the United States for an extended period of time to explain why a Social Security number was not issued in the past. Proof of foreign residency may include medical, school, and employment records.
    • If the child was born in the United States, form SSA-L706 (Click HERE to download a PDF of Form SSA-L706-(PDF / 3 pages / 292kb) must also be completed, signed and submitted together with the application and other documents. This allows the Social Security Administration to verify the birth certificate with the custodian of the record.
    • If the child was born in the UK we can also accept a UK birth certificate.
  2. Proof of the child's US citizenship

Option 2 – How do I apply for a social security number for myself OR my child over 12?

Those over the age of 12 must apply in person for a short interview. Contact the Federal Benefits Unitvia our contact formto arrange an appointment. Please let us know which country you were born in, in the United States or abroad. We recommend that you include "SSN Appointment Required" in the subject line and let our office know your preferred appointment time at least three days in advance. We will let you know if your request is granted. If you live in the UK, your interview will take place at the Federal Benefits Unit in London or at a designated US military agency. If you live in Africa, we will assist you in arranging your interview appointment.

B.At the time of your interviewYou must provide the following original documents– We do not accept photocopies. Bringing your original documents AND photocopies with you will speed up your visit to the embassy. We check and keep the photocopies and return your original documents to you. If you do not have all the required documentation with you at your interview, you may have to return for a second interview.

1. Proof of Birth

I. If you or the child were born in the United States, you must submit documentary evidence that you or the child resided outside of the United States. If you or the child were born in the United States, form SSA-L706 (Download a PDF of Form SSA-L706(PDF / 3 pages / 80Kb) must also be completed, signed and submitted together with the application and other documents. This allows the Social Security Administration to verify the birth certificate with the custodian of the record.

ATTENTION: If the maiden name and the name on the ID card are different, proof of the name change must also be submitted.

4. Proof of identity of the parent signing the application

If applicable - a parent can sign the form for a child up to the age of 18; a child over the age of 12 can sign the form.

Option 3 - I received a US visa that allows me to work in the US. Can I apply for a social security card before traveling to the US?

If you have obtained a US visa that allows you to work in the United States, you must apply for a Social Security Card upon arrival in the United States of America.

Suitable identification documents are:

  • Original US passport, must be current and signed;
  • Original Permanent Resident Alien Card, must be current;
  • Original US driver's license, must be current;
  • An original UK passport or driving license is accepted but must be accompanied by proof of US citizenship such as a naturalization certificate or US birth certificate
  • A passport or ID card issued by another country may be acceptable if your US citizenship is already properly listed on your Social Security card. Please contact the Federal Benefits Unit for guidance.

If the replacement card is for a child, we require proof of identity for both the child and the parent signing the form.

SSN required for US PASSPORT application: If you don't remember your social security number (or your child's) and need it for a US passport application, you should apply for a replacement SSN card using the instructions above. Please allow at least one month for the replacement card application to be processed and the card shipped from the US. Note: This process cannot be accelerated.

If the name on your ID differs from the name on your most recent social security number, see option #6 below,for instructions on changing the name on your record.

Option 5 - I have lost or misplaced my social security number (or my child's). I am (or my child is) NOT a US citizen or legal permanent resident. How do I find my social security number?

Valid from August 1, 2014The Social Security Administration stopped providing printouts or checks of the Social Security number. The Federal Benefits Unit cannot provide you with a printout or proof of a Social Security Number.

If you are not a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident ("green card" holder) and need to verify your Social Security number information, you must request a printout of your Social Security number record (known as a Numident) directly from the Social Security Administration. These requests can take up to 60 daysor moreto be processed and are processed on a first-in-come basis, regardless of the shipping method used.

Option 6 - I have changed my name (by marriage, divorce, altered birth certificate, court order or statutory declaration/deed poll, how do I change my social security entry?

To change your name on your social security records, the following steps are required;

  1. complete oneApplying for a social security card,Formular SS-5-FS(PDF / 5 pages / 125 KB) – all questions must be answered and legible.
  2. Provide the following original documents –Photocopies will not be accepted:
    • Proof of name change
      • Original Marriage or Divorce Certificate (If the marriage or divorce certificate is more than 2 years old or does not contain biographical information such as date of birth or age, you must also provide proof of identity in your OLD name. If you do not have ID in your old name, you must write an explanation as to why you do not have such proof of identity and submit proof of identity in your NEW name).
        OR
      • Other documents such as B. a court order, a deed survey or a legally required name change declaration
